Division Meeting, Railroad Diorama Contest and Board of Directors Elections

Clinic:  Del Kittendorf presents "Brightline."  Brightline is the new higher speed passenger railroad that recently started operations in South Florida. It is a truly America’s 21st Century railroad. The presentation will cover the operations to date, the Running Repair Facility (“B” shops), the first three depots and actual ride experience. Also discussed will be the Phase II and III plans and some other future expansion ideas for the railroad.

Bring and Brag:  Anything related to Amtrak or whatever you have been working on and want to share. 

Board of Directors elections will be held during the meeting.  Please review Voting instructions and candidates' statements before the meeting.  Chuck Hoesch and his elections team will be in the lobby. 

Division Meeting and Model and Photo Contests

Clinic:  Tom Gordon presents "Model Railroad Technical GeekSpeak Deciphered."  This presentation will attempt to unravel the types of technology, varieties of electronics and versions of TLA's (three letter acronyms) in order to help the modeler understand just what all this stuff is, and how it is supposed to interoperate.

Bring and Brag:  Hand held controllers for use on your railroad or whatever you have been working on and want to share.

Fall Model and Photo Contests will be held during the meeting.

Please wear red ,white and blue to Remember Sept 11 victims and families. We remember that day that so many folks lost their lives just going to work like any other day or flying across the country. We are so blessed to live in the United States of America but we have to slow down at times to thank those first responders, military personnel,and countless folks who sacrificed so much that awful day and for years to come. Our thoughts and prayers to all of them. We still live in the greatest country in the world. Never Forget!  God Bless the United States of America.  

Clinic:  Bill Frey, Train Collectors Association, Terminus Chapter (GA).  TCA preserves an important segment of history—Tinplate Toy Trains—through research, establishment of collecting standards, education, community outreach and fellowship, and to promote the growth and enjoyment of the hobby. 

Bring and Brag:  Western and Atlantic RR items or whatever you have been working on and want to share. 

Zephyr Up for Auction.  A complete Digitrax Zephyr system will be auctioned at this month's meeting to raise funds for the Piedmont Pilgrimage.  The system was donated through the generosity of Digitrax.  Cash or check only!

Clinic:  Lloyd Neal presents "When Atlanta Took the Train." Lloyd, Assistant Librarian at the Southeastern Railway Museum, was part of the team that produced the recently published When Atlanta Took the Train. His presentation starts with an overview of the railroads in Atlanta including photos of the passenger train stations they used. He will compare the Terminal Station and Union Station areas from the early 1970's with photos of the same locations in 2018. He will share some of his photos and stories of the Atlanta passenger train scene of the early 1970's that are not in the book. Copies of the book will be available for purchase. 

There will be a drawing for one of his books at the meeting!

Clinic:  Mike Cummings presents "Fallen Flags of the Southeast 1960 thru 1980."  An overview of the period of mergers, acquisitions and bankruptcies that forever changed the railroad industry in the Southeastern USA.

Clinic:  David Gelmini presents "Rebuilding Southern Railway Motorcar No. 8103."  David and Tyler Gelmini will discuss how they acquired and restored Southern Railway Motorcar No. 8103.  They will also tell us about their first trip and the motorcar group they belong to.

Division Meeting and Model and Photo Contests

Clinic:  Dr. Joe Nichols, Jr., MMR presents "Block detection options and more with JMRI."

This clinic will review the options for block detection as well as the costs to add this feature to an existing layout.  We will discuss the hardware for detection that can be used for any DCC (and with adaptation DC) system with output to panel LEDs or to a full track display panel on a monitor or TV.  We will review the cost and sense of installation.  This can be adapted to run trains over the internet from other parts of the world.

Spring Model and Photo Contests will be held during the meeting.

Please bring models and photos, along with completed contest forms and other paperwork, to the contest room beginning at 7:00.

Model contest entries do not have to be scratch-built models.  Super-detailed kits are welcome entries.  There are a number of categories, including motive power, revenue cars, non-revenue cars, passenger cars, cabooses, and structures.  Models may take first, second, or third place awards without earning merit awards.  Merit awards are given to those models which receive a score of 87.5 points or better.
